Cricket breakthrough for Benoni Northerns 1991, January 4

BENONI CITY TIMES, JANUARY 4, 1991 PAGE 16 The Benoni Northerns first cricket side finished fourth in the Northern Transvaal Premier League, under the watchful eye of new manager, Graham Robey. Benoni, after a few lean years, managed to secure a sponsorship this year. They were offered incentives to finish in the top six, thus qualifying for the Super League in 1991. The players responded magnificently and the end results spoke for itself. Seasoned campaigner and a captain, Paul Robinson, had the difficult task of controlling a mixed bag of players. Denis Lindsay’s letter of thanks in 1988

I recall it was a most memorable occasion. A grand function where we gathered the Springboks from Denis’s era to honour him, a cricketing great and whom we were privileged to have as our friend. This event is part of our history at Northerns just prior to the Benoni Cricket Club’s amalgamation with Northerns.

Donald Campbell organized the function - Denis was one of the first ever cricketers to be granted a benefit and I’m not sure exactly how much was raised I think it was about R 2000 but what I do know was that what ever the amount was, he gave it straight to a charity and to development of cricket to the disadvantaged. A true legend Denis was.

Founding Benoni Northern Sports Club

The Benoni Town Council developed a residential area north of the Town for the development of houses and called the area Northmead, to the East of Northmead was Rynfield. The Council allocated an area between these two suburbs for the development of sporting facilities. The Council in the sixties created a Board under the Chairmanship of John Barrable whose task was to develop sporting facilities for the residents. Hence the Northerns Area Sports Board was created. The designated area was named Albert Bekker Park and earmarked as a multi-sport facility. Today more so known as Benoni Northerns Sports Fields. The Board facilitated funds from Council for the development of the facilities. (more…)
